Born from frustration with spreadsheets
As finance professionals, we saw the same pattern every day: smart people wasting their time building and fixing Excel models. 80% data processing, 20% analysis. That had to change. Liquid was built to flip that ratio — so finance teams spend their time on insights and strategy, not copy-pasting.
The idea behind Liquid grew out of our founder Thijs Olthof's previous venture. Across different phases of that business, IIM, he saw firsthand how challenging it was to get a grip on cashflow, budgets, and consolidation.
IIM developed smart home hardware, manufactured it in China, and sold it across Europe. In practice, this created a complex puzzle for the finance team. To gain control over liquidity, inventory, and profitability, they built an intricate web of spreadsheets, manual data connections, and version management.
